When I run multiple webs of light weight material, it sometimes wrinkles prior to cutting. How do I avoid that?
This is a common problem if the webs have baggy centers or edges. When the webs come together, static may cause them to stick together (especially on coated grades). If a web is baggy, it stays loose within the layers. When it wraps around a roll, it causes a wrinkle.
Make sure the tension across each web is consistent, eliminating baggy edges.
Next, keep the webs separated until just prior to the cutter infeed. Avoid severe wraps around lead in rolls to avoid wrinkles.
Finally, add bowed rolls or add a chevron pattern to rolls where the offensive wrinkling is occurring. These designs have the effect of smoothing out the baggy web condition prior to the cutting action.
